Google to speed up AI releases in response to ChatGPT.

As a response to the introduction of ChatGPT, Google is apparently planning to accelerate the delivery of its AI products.

According to a CNBC report, Pichai and Google AI Chief Jeff Dean were asked in a meeting whether ChatGPT represented a “missed opportunity” for the company. Pichai and Dean said that Google’s own models were just as capable but the company had to move “more conservatively than a small startup” because of the “reputational risk” it poses.

Google now appears to be speeding up the reveal and deployment of its own AI solutions. To that aim, it is apparently the company's goal to expedite the evaluation procedure that determines if it is conducting business ethically.

One of the first AI products expected to be released sounds a lot like what Microsoft and OpenAI have in mind for Bing.

A demo of a chatbot-enhanced Google Search is expected at the company’s annual I/O developer conference in May. The demo will prioritise “getting facts right, ensuring safety and getting rid of misinformation.”

Other AI-powered product launches expected to be shown include an image generator, a set of tools for enterprises to develop their own AI prototypes within a browser window, and an app for testing such prototypes.

This year, Google plans to introduce more than 20 AI-powered projects. Investors who have complained about Google's sluggish AI advancements in previous years might feel more at ease after the announcements, but ethical experts will be alarmed by the company's emphasis on speed over safety.

Google was changing its AI review processes to speed up the release of new solutions and competitor ChatGPT will be featured at the company’s I/O developer conference in May. Baidu looks set to beat Google by a couple of months.

Bloomberg reports that Baidu will reveal its own AI-powered chatbot in March. The currently unnamed tool will be integrated into the company’s search product.

Powering the Baidu ChatGPT competitor is ‘ERNIE’ (Enhanced Language RepresentatioN with Informative Entities), a powerful AI model with 10 billion parameters.

Later that year, Baidu released ERNIE 2.0 which became the first model to set a score higher than 90 on the GLUE benchmark for evaluating NLU systems.

In 2021, Baidu’s researchers posted a paper on ERNIE 3.0 in which they claim the model exceeds human performance on the SuperGLUE natural language benchmark. ERNIE 3.0 set a new top score on SuperGLUE and displaced efforts from Google and Microsoft.

Most of the world’s attention until now has been on language model advancements from the likes of OpenAI, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft. However, Baidu will likely get its time in the spotlight in just a couple of months.
